Diffusive Evolution of Stable and Metastable Phases I: Local Dynamics of Interfaces

چکیده
We find analytical solutions to the Cahn-Hilliard equation for the dynamics of an interface in a system with a conserved order parameter (Model B). We show that, although steady-state solutions of Model B are unphysical in the far-field, they shed light on the local dynamics of an interface. Exact solutions are given for a particular class of orderparameter potentials, and an expandable integral equation is derived for the general case. As well as revealing some generic properties of interfaces moving under condensation or evaporation, the formalism is used to investigate two distinct modes of interface propagation in systems with a metastable potential well. Given a sufficient transient increase in the flux of material onto a condensation nucleus, the normal motion of the interface can be disrupted by interfacial unbinding, leading to growth of a macroscopic amount of a metastable phase. Diffusive Evolution of Stable and Metastable Phases II: Theory of Non-Equilibrium Behaviour in Colloid-Polymer Mixtures
By analytically solving some simple models of phase-ordering kinetics, we suggest a mechanism for the onset of non-equilibrium behaviour in colloid-polymer mixtures. These mixtures can function as models of atomic systems; their physics therefore impinges on many areas of thermodynamics and phase-ordering. An exact solution is found for the motion of a single, planar interface separating a grow...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulation of a binary mixture lubricant for use in hard disk interfaces
In Hard Disk Drives (HDD), it is necessary to decrease the Flying Height (FH) between the head and the disk (currently, FH is around 3-5 nm) so as to increase recording densities. Retaining the solid lubricant has become a difficult proposition owing to intermittent contact between the surfaces. ZTMD and Z are used as solid lubricant to lubricate these interfaces. In this paper, the behavior of...
متن کاملEffect of Amorphous Silica Addition on Martensitic Phase Transformation of Zirconia and Investigation of its Tetragonal Structure Stability Mechanisms
This work is focused on the effect of amorphous SiO2 addition on the phase transformation and microstructural evolution of ZrO2 particles. Considering the structural similarities between the amorphous ZrO2 and its tetragonal structure, XRD results showed initial nucleation of metastable tetragonal ZrO2 from its amorphous matrix upon heat treatment. This metastable phase is unstable in pure ZrO2...

متن کاملSpinodal decomposition related to age-hardening and cuboidal structures in a dental low-carat gold alloy with relatively high Cu/Ag content ratio
A dental Au–Ag–Cu–Pd alloy with a relatively low Au content and a high Cu/Ag content ratio was examined to determine the correlation between the microstructural changes by the spinodal decomposition and age-hardening behaviour using a hardness test, X-ray diffraction study, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Separation of the parent α0 phase oc...
